No new Word Smith pages this week (as I mentioned before, things are on hiatus until sometime in January), but there is an interlude (in colour) up for viewing (dis)pleasure.
And because I feel like babbling a bit more, here's the original sketchbook version:
It's showing The Pen and her brother having a sibling moment with their in-game characters pictured behind them. As revealed in episode 3, The Pen's real name is Samantha; I actually agonized over this for a while before settling on the name as nothing was really jumping out at me as an obvious choice. However, once I'd settled on The Pen's name, it was relatively easy to pick her brother's name: Samuel (I don't know if it will ever appear in an actual episode as he's a relatively minor character). I also rather suspect that they're twins, also a fact that seems unlikely to surface in an actual episode. Oh well, we shall see. We shall see.
That is all for today. With a little bit of luck there may be another interlude next week, but no guarantees one way or the other.

Posting in Space
Aaaaaaaaand page 4 of episode 4 of The Word Smith is online. Phew! Guess I managed to get it done by my target time, but introductions will have to wait until next year.
I'm not entirely sure when I'll resume posting The Word Smith in the new year; that may depend somewhat on how much (if anything) I get done over the holidays. Hopefully the next page will appear before the end of January - that seems doable, but no promises.
While The Word Smith will be on hiatus over the holidays, there may be some interludes of some sort appearing in the interim. Watch this space, or stare off into space, or something, whichever seems most productive and/or least painful.
And, as is my wont, here are some recent entries from the sketchbook. Like last week, they are both Word Smith related. Enjoy! (Or don't, it's not like I can force anyone to, after all.)
Here's another picture of The Pen's in-game character in a sort-off running-ish pose. At least, that's what it was meant to be.
And here is The Word Smith, brandishing the Grammar Hammer. He hasn't been seen since the first page of episode 4, but don't worry as he shall be putting in an appearance. Oh yes.
Anywho, that is all for this week. Stay tuned for something sometime in the indeterminate future.

Googly Eyes
The next page of The Word Smith is up. Go read it, or else... you won't have read it. Hmmm.... I wonder if I need to work on my motivational techniques. In any case, I should be able to get page 4 done before disappearing for the holidays for some unspecified length of time. And after that? Who knows? (Not me, that's for sure.)
Page 3 was based on the "comic with no people" I posted about a month ago. The actual layout for this page was done before that in thumbnails, but the people-less comic was used to flesh out the locale from what existed in the thumbs (the bottom panel from the people-less comic will be the first panel of page 4, when it is done).
And this week I think I feel like posting two pictures from the sketchbook. Excitement.
It's The Pen, looking someone put upon as she often does (and is) in both "civilian" clothes and her fencing/sidekick gear.
And next up is The Pen's in-game character, Taramir, crouched and ready to spring into action (no, she's not constipated). Taramir last appeared in this blog about six months ago (unnamed at the time). She also appears in the title page for episode 4.
Well, that is pretty much it for this week. The pantomime is over and seems to have been a success so no I return to my regularly scheduled life, or some semblance thereof.

No, It's Not Done Yet
Hey, it's time for another page of The Word Smith! It looks like there'll be another page next week as well, but after that, all bets are off. Maybe I'll stop early for the holidays. Or I'll say that, anyway. Yeah.
And I think for this week's sketchbook entry, I'll just leave this here:
This was drawn about a week before Hallowe'en (so I'm posting things out of order - gasp!) as part of this terms comics workshop. It's a word ladder comic based on a simple word ladder thingy. The words in my ladder are underlined. Naturally, I ended with CAPE.
That is all.

A Narf A Day
Page 1 of The Word Smith, episode 4, has been posted. I did some computer-based toning for the page but I don't know how long I'll keep doing that since it didn't seem to be a whole lot faster than colouring... I'm really just experimenting with things to find out what reasonably fits into my time constraints. Anywho, episode 4 takes place in the evening of the same day as the previous episdoes.
And to fill out the sketch book quota for the week, here's another page of hands:
This was drawn on Hallowe'en which explains why one has been severed.
Anywho, nothing else really exciting to comment on. The pantomime I'm in got off to a good start so I shall take that as a sign that the universe approves of it. Or something.
Until next time,

Once More Unto the Weeb
Well, I didn't manage any further progress on episode 4 this week, but I said I'd start posting it this week so that's what I'm going to do, gosh darn it, and with any luck I'll be able to make it through to the holidays without any delays. In any case, the title page for episode 4 of The Word Smith is available at the usual haunt.
I thought it might also be mildly interesting to show the pencilled version of the title page:
For the final version, I decided that I wanted the Word Smith banner to be a bit more prominent so, through the magic of tracing paper, I lowered the central character and then copy-pasted the banner from the episode 3 title page into its final position on the coloured version.
Anyway, that's pretty much it for this week. The pantomime I'm in opens later this week, so I've been sequestered in the theatre all weekend and have had/will have dress rehearsals last night and tonight. I'm looking forward to next week when things mostly go back to normal - there will be shows three nights a week, but no rehearsals. Yay!

Splorg Splorg Revolution
Last night was the pantomime I am in had their first rehearsal in the actual theatre space that we'll be performing in. There was a set. It was actually made of wood! This feels like a big step up from cardboard.
Anywho, I'm still not quite as far along as I would like to be with episode 4 of The Word Smith before starting to post with it. If I'm not by next week, I'll just go ahead and start posting it anyway and concede that there will be gaps in my posting schedule or whatever. In the meantime, here's some design sketches:
This is an evolving set of design sketches for a monster known as the King of All Splorgs that appears briefly in episode 4. Haven't settled on the final desig yet, but I've got a little while yet before I have to decide.
This was actually done as an exercise for this term's comic workshop - a comic with no characters. I used it as an opportunity work out a bit of location design for episode 4 (which will start showing up around page 3).
Anyway, that's all for the present. Look forward to the start of episode 4 of The Word Smith next week.

Not the Face
So! More stuff from the sketchbook this week. To start off, I've drawn another page of the New Adventures of The Freak in the Cape:
Along with this comes the usual disclaimer that more of these will be drawn if and when I have the time, motivation and inspiration to do so.
And to fill the Word Smith void, such as it is, here's some character design for a couple of characters that will be appearing in episode 4:
One of these characters is important, the other less so, but which is which shall become apparant at some undisclosed time in the future.
Until then,

Compost
I have decided to hold off on starting to post episode 4 of The Word Smith for a little while (hopefully not too long) so that I can get more of it done before starting and hopefully not have to pause in the middle of the episode. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I know, but that's stuff for you. (It's like stuff.)
I'm still sketching though so I'll continue to inflict my sketches upon the internets, like so:
This is a couple of variants on a design for Ellaire (or is it Elaire? I don't remember how it's spelled...), a minor villain from the Kyoujo RPG which I have a feeling I may have mentioned in this blog once or twice.
In completely other news, I took down my balcony garden last night (/sadface). Partly because of the storm (though we seem not to have gotten much of it, comparatively), but also because the tomatoes and basil have been looking rather sad of late. Indeed, the wind over the last several days has stripped the basil of pretty much all of its leaves. I did, however, harvest another seven (unripe) tomatoes of decent size before sending the plants to their doom, which will hopefully ripen in my kitchen. I also plucked off another handful of jalapenos. My parsley is still looking relatively lively, however, and I'm thinking of looking into freezing it or something. As I think I mentioned in my previous post, I consider the garden experiment to have been a reasonable success, and now I have to figure out how to use up all these tomatoes and jalapenos I've got.

Combing the Desert
The exciting (or not) conclusion to episode 3 of The Word Smith is now available. I am going to try to keep plowing ahead with episode 4 at the same schedule, though I expect there will be some inevitable pauses due to life and the universe in general.
I think I'm going to post a couple of sketchbook pages today, drawn from my current sketchbook and not from the archives like last week.
A quick sketch of Gillin, one of my FR characters, in mid-stride, who hasn't appeared on this blog in a while. I misspelled her name on the sketch label (fixed in the sketchbook, but I didn't notice it until after having scanned it in) - I used to spell her name with only one "l" but at some point switched to two. How's that for some useless trivia?
This is just a bit of a desert landscape. It started with the swirly spiral in the upper-left and I thought "hey, that could be a hot desert sun" and what does one find in a desert but disembodied robot arms? There's also some Tim Burton-esque things happening in the background with that one sand dune.
Anyway, that's all for now. Until next time,

Drawing on the Past
So, it seems that page 5 of the Word Smith, episode 3 is now on-line in the usual place. Tremble in fear, o mighty interweebs! Or just go read it, whatever.
In light of last week's sketching exercise, I decided to dig up my original sketchbook an marvel at its terribleness. It was pretty terrible and I shall spare the internets the terror of it all for I am a magnanimous Freak. Also, I'd be pretty embarassed to put that stuff in what is basically a public forum (even if there are only a few people who actually read what I choose to vomit onto the internet - how's that for imagery?)
Suffice it to say, my early forays into drawing were somewhat, in retrospect, not good. I had no sense of proportion at all, or at least very little, and it was all kind of laughably bad. And whilst I make no claims of being particularly good or anything now, I'm certainly rather better than I used to be, which is a good thing, I suppose. Yay for progress. At the very least, I can cobble together stuff that I don't think I'll be terribly ashamed of ten years or so down the line. Of course, part of the whole purpose of this is to practice and get better. At least there seems to be some tangible evidence that it's all paying off, at least a little bit.
Even in that first sketchbook one can see some progress - towards the end there's a few things that I don't think are completely terrible. In fact, I picked one to show in public:
In fact, I think it looks kind of neat, though it probably helps that it's not human. I'm not 100% sure what this was meant to be (aside from some ridiculously complicated contraption) though I suspect it may have been an idea for the Super Computer (from my FR project).

Sketchy Business
It appears, curiously enough, that page 4 of episode 3 of the Word Smith has found its way onto the interwebs. Rejoice? Or not.
In other news, I am running another comic workshop this fall. It is a follow-up to the one I did last year using a follow-up book to the one we used last year by the same authors. Our first meeting, in addition to all that fun organizational stuffs, we to talk about the usefulness of sketchbooks and do some time doing some free sketching. I figured I'd post my sketchbook page since I've, you know, been doing that for a while now.
It's all just assorted random sketchy stuff which was one of the points of the exercise (though certainly not the only way to approach a sketchbook page - I primarily went this route because it's not how I usually approach sketching).
Anyway, stay tuned to next week for the next page of the Word Smith and more random babble on the interwebs.

Prepare Yourself
The Word Smith episode 3, page 3 is now up on my sorry excuse for a website. It is also in colour and seeing as we're now half-way through the episode, I'll probably just finish up the whole episode using colour. So, yay for that? This page includes some gradients so it's kind of fancy.
From the sketchbook, today we have The Pen in fencing regalia:
Of course, she should really be wearing a full fencing mask rather than just her visor, but that would hide her face so I took some liberties. Drew this whilst at the first CTRL-A show of the term and had a small audience for part of it which was, different, I guess (they were quiet so it didn't bother me much). Can't imagine it was overly interesting to watch me draw, but who am I to judge?

Flattened
Page 2 of episode 3 of the Word Smith is now available. As fate would have it, I ended up colouring this page too, due to continued insanity. Actually, I downloaded a couple of plug-ins that handle some of the more tedious aspects of doing the flatting and they sped up the process considerably. They're not perfect, mind you, as you have the same basic problem as flood filling: if there are any holes in the line work, the colour for an area escapes into connected areas. This means I have to go and make sure there are no gaps in the linework which is still a tedious and error-prone proccess, though still faster than flatting by hand to the point where it's at least twice as fast. This means I may actually be colouring a lot more pages than I had intended - or, at least, I'll probably do episode 3 fully in colour now (I have page 3 nearly coloured already). Adding shading is still laborious though, so I may just use flat colours in the future to save time if I decide to keep colouring things, unless I come up with some better way to handle shading.
Here's how the flatting for page 1 looks like compared to what I did by hand:
It doesn't really handle hand-shaded areas very well and can produce lots of little areas, but still faster than doing things by hand, at least so far.
The sketchbook has, sadly, been a bit neglected of late due to my focus on the Word Smith stuff, but here's one of the more recent sketchbook drawings which may have some relevance to page 4 of episode 3:
Those are suppose to be swimming trunks, by the way, not boxers.
Anywho, that's all for now.

Behind the Lines
Page one of episode three of The Word Smith has now gone on-line. As an added bonus, I, for reasons I cannot fathom, decided to colour this page which was very time consuming! Thus, do not expect to see many coloured pages in the future (unless I get much faster at it) and do make sure to go look at the final coloured page because it was kind of a pain to do.
I also figured I'd take a few moments to talk about how I went about colouring the page. For those familiar with Photoshop or colouring comics in general, this is probably all old hat. For those who aren't terribly familiar with either of those things it might still be a bit dull, but go and read it anyway.
So, naturally, I started with the scanned in inked pages. One could, of course, do everything digitally, but I'm still doing thing drawing/inking the old fashion way, at least for now. Here's the black and white page:
Yay! The first step is to put the line art on a new layer (leaving the background blank) and set the layer to multiply. This makes the white parts transparent, allowing you to draw underneath.
The first step is a technique called "flatting". I'm not going to go over this in excrutiating details (tutorials exist on the weeb for the terminally curious), but the basic idea, is that you outline each area (in my case using the polygonal lasso tool) and fill each area with a solid colour. Generally, the outlines should be created under the inked lines so that, when filled, there are no gaps betwixt the lines and the coloured areas. This is all done on the background layer (or, I suppose, any layer underneath the line layer) with all forms of anti-aliasing, feathering and so on turned off. The idea is to create areas of solid colour that a colourist can easily select when doing their colouring. With the line layer turned off, the flats will look something like the following:
See? Kind of a neat looking effect, in and of itself. You can actually use any colours you want at the flatting stage, but since I'm doing my own colouring, I just flatted with the final colours. As you might imagine, doing all of this by hand is a bit tedious. I understand there are plug-ins that can help with this so I will probably look into that the next time I decide I'm crazy enough to do some colouring.
Now, one can leave things as flat colours, but I decided to go a little further and add some shadows. I actually did this fairly similarly to flatting. I created a shadow layer between the flat and line layers set to multiply with about 80% opacity. Then I just created my shadow areas in a similar manner to flatting, except there were a lot fewer areas so it didn't take quite as long. With the line art turned off, it looks like the following:
Similar to above, except now with shadows.
Well, that was basically it. One can add hilights and other effects, but I decided to stop with shadows. And don't forget that you can see the final, full colour version here.

Ripe Tomatoes
Today, I am starting to post episode three of The Word Smith. I know, I know, I'll bet you can hardly contain yourself for joy so I'll just get to the point.
Added some toning in photoshop for something a bit different.
The plan is to post one page per week, probably Tuesdays. I'm fairly close to being done drawing/inking episode 3 so that should be doable. I'm not sure if I'm going to post these to my blog or just to my website (such as it is), but at the least I'll link to each episode from here.
In other news, I have now harvested four tomatoes (one of which became part of today's sandwich, so far with no ill effects) from my garden so I suppose I can consider that part of the garden a success.

That'll Leave A Mark
Hello internets. Today I give you page four of "The New Adventures of The Freak in the Cape". It goes a little something like this:
Dear readers: this is a work of fiction and no Freaks were harmed during the making of this comic.
Could this be the end of The Freak in the Cape? Assuredly not! It is, however, likely to be a while until we see the aftermath since, in addition to my normal disclaimer that future pages will be drawn as time and inspiration allows, I suspect that there's going to be a long-ish flashback before returning to the matter at hand.

Foliage
Taking a break from posting sketches this week to show some pictures of my balcony garden experiment in progress (not seen since it's first mention way back when).
The tomato plant in my hanging planter is doing quite well and is laden with several developing tomatoes. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping they ripen so I can have some fresh balcony tomatoes at some point.
My jalapenos are also doing fairly well with lots of proto-peppers in development. I hope they all ripen too and that they turn out nice and spicy.
Finally, this is my box of basil. It's growing quite well - much more basil than I'm going to manage to use up myself, I expect. One plant would have been plenty and I planted three.
Not pictured are my green onions (I've harvested about 2/3 of them so far) and my potted tomato plants. Overall, things are certainly growing, now I just have to hope the tomatoes and jalapenos ripen at which point I will consider the experiment a success. I started everything from seeds, so if I do this again next year I'll either start with seedlings or start things indoors about a month or so sooner than I did this year to hopefully be able to start harvesting sooner. Crossing my fingers right now in the hopes of being able to harvest at least some tomatoes and jalapenos this year.
Until next time,

Hooray for Science!
Busy(ish) working on episode 3 of The Word Smith (amongst other things) which is progressing slowly though somewhat steady-ish. Today is a couple of sketches related to episode 3, though for stuff which is mostly in the background.
It's sort of a "manga-within-the-comic", specifically it's the (fictional) manga that The Pen is holding in the second last panel on page 6 of episode 2 (though not named at the time).
And a related sketch with another character from the same "manga-within-the-comic". Incidentally, the character sketch from my previous post is the villain for the series. It seems likely that these characters will show up again in at least one later episode of The Word Smith, though they may not be too prominent beyond that.
And that's all for today. Next time, I might show some pictures of green things.

It's Tuesday
Currently working on pencils for episode 3 of The Word Smith (about half done), part of which requires doing some additional character designs. These are for some background characters that may not really get much notice, but there's a chance they may show up again in the future so I should at least try to be consistent. All this is to say that today's post is showing some of the design for one of these characters.
These were the two initial design sketches for a mad-scientist type character. At some point after those, I did the final design sketch:
I apparently decided I preferred the second of the two original sketches. While his feet got cut off, he's supposed to be wearing flip-flops. He's eccentric like that. Eccentrically evil, or evilly eccentric.
Anyway, that's all for today. Until next time,

Title That Has Nothing to do With the Post
Just one thing today so I'll get right to it.
It's the third page of "The New Adventures of The Freak in the Cape". As before, I'm doing these when motivation and inspiration strike in some relatively coordinated manner, so no guarantees on timing (or existence) of future pages.

Defeeted
I've done a few pages worth of drawing hands in the past so I thought, for something different, I should practice drawing feet. Yeah. Sounds exciting. Are you ready? Because it might just be a little too exciting and I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt by all the excitement. Well, here goes...
Zapow! There. Can you feel the excitement? If so, might want to take something for that. Oh, and there's one hand in there. Can you guess which one it is? Careful, it might be tricky. (Hint: it's the hand.)
That was so exciting that I thought I'd ramp it up a bit more. Turn it up another notch. Up to eleven. Maybe twelve or even plaid. Ready? Hold on, it's about to get nuts. Squirrelly, even.
It's Cape-Freak! And what's with that pose? Does he think he's Sephiroth or something? (Hint: no. Besides, Kefka is much cooler anyway.)
And that's all for today's exciting episode of The Freak Report. Tune in next time, whenever that is.

This is a post. It is about some things.
Well hello again internets. It's time again for a journey of some sort. Allow your mind to transport you to a fantastical realm where reality is nothing but a figment of your imagination. Or don't. It's all up to you, really. I mean, who am I to say what you should do? No need to get defensive or anything. Sheesh.
Um, anywho, how about some drawings of debatable merit?
Some character design for episode 3 of The Word Smith. I'll probably get rid of (or alter) that jacket for the final version. At least, that's what I'm currently thinking. (Well, not currently as in this instant, but, you know, in a more general sense.)
And some potential designs for a character that will be appearing in episode 5. I may play with the design some more before it's finalized, however.
Anyway, that's today's, uh, stuff. It seems that I have started working on the thumbnails for episode 3 for The Word Smith so I may not end up doing as much sketchbook drawing whilst I work on that episode. Not, I'm sure, that the internets are really all that concerned about that.
Whelp, until next time.

Happy Canada Day
It's Canada Day and what better way to celebrate than post some drawings that have nothing to do whatsoever with Canada Day, other than being drawn by a Canadian.
Continuing on with the character design that I started last time with an individual shot of each of the characters. I went from right-to-left in the order that they appeared in the group picture (for no particular reason) - see previous post. This is the first of the three g4m3rz. Yes, that's Saturn-on-a-stick.
The second of the three g4m3rz. Running with daggers is only slightly less dangerous than running with scissors.
And the last of the three g4m3rz. Yes that is an oven door being used as a shield and that is a pizza emblazoned on his tabard. He's a Master Chef, you see.
Anyway, that's all for now. Have a happy fireworks day.

g4m3 0n
I've been working on fleshing out the rest of the plotline continuing The Word Smith mini-comics I've done. So far, it looks like it'll clock in at about 12 episodes, depending a little on how I finalize the break down. As part of that, I've been doing a bit of work on character design for some of the characters that will be appearing in future episodes.
This shows characters that will be appearing in episode 4. They are (minus the rightmost one) the in-game characters of the three g4m3rz from episode 1 for the game they play (you can see the characters on their laptop screens on the first page so it should be possible to deduce which is which). The rightmost character is not one of the g4m3rz but is acquanted with them. In the actual sketchbook drawing, her legs ended up being too long (I shortened them in photoshop) which is a result of a problem I run in to sometimes - I have a tendancy to focus too much on the details too soon sometimes and don't want to erase something that I've spent a lot of time on when I notice things are a little off. In this case, that was her armour, which was based off of my favourite piece of armour from Final Fantasy XI.
And here's an individual shot of the rightmost one. She uses a gladius style sword. I may not keep the cheek mark as I think it probably makes her look too much like one of my FR characters.
Whelp, that's all for this installment. Tune in next time when we continue to flog the weeb.

Eye in the Sky With Bacon
So. Stuff and Things. A couple of miscellaneous things from the sketchbook today. First up is an attempt at a semi-realistic eye because, I suppose, that was what I felt like drawing at the time:
With a little comic at the bottom commenting on the creepiness factor of a floating eye. But hey, everything's better with bacon, right?
Next up, it's time once again for a hand drawing bonanza! Because, hey, you can never have too much practice drawing hands. These ones are more like the first batch of hands I did since there are no props involved.
Rock on, hands. Rock on.
The next post will probably get into some more character design I've been working on for a future episode of The Word Smith. But until then,

New Adventures
I guess it's time for another post or something. Not, I'm sure, that anyone was really wondering "hey, when's that freak going to make another post?" Answer to a question nobody asked, I guess.
Anyway, today is two related comic pages from my sketchbook (not drawn consecutively, however):
Not entirely sure where I'm going with these or if I'll do any more of them. I guess that will depend on if any further ideas come to mind and whether or not I feel like doing more. Only time will tell. Failing that, I'll tell time.

Word Smith Episode 2
I've taken a break from my regular drawing in order to finish off the inking for episode 2 of The Word Smith. Rather than post the whole thing here (seeing as the pencils have already been posted to this blog) I decided to put them up here (starting with the title page which has appeared in a previous post).
And that would seem to be all for today.

Lectures and Things
I was at a computer graphics conference last week (which is what the poster was for) which was... well, a bit boring, in all honesty. While there were some interesting papers presented, the conference itself was a lot like sitting in a lecture all day and lectures can often be a bit dull, even when the subject matter itself is interesting. This also wasn't helped by the fact that some of the speakers weren't really all that good at giving talks. But I went prepared and had my trusty sketchbook with me to keep me entertained.
This was the view looking up from the registration desk, as I spent one uneventful afternoon helping out with registration.
And this was drawn after spending a bit of time watching the trees blowing in the wind outside of the building that the conference was being held in.
Anyway, that is all for the moment.

When Toasters Attack
As part of my conference poster, I wrote a one-page comic script, basically off the top of my head, which I used, in part, to illustrate what I was talking about and also used to show some results. I also drew up some thumbnails and recently completed a relatively quickly done inked version:
As with the poster, this was drawn in photoshop using the Cintiq. The actual layout for the page was generated from the algorithm I'm working on.
On the pencil-and-paper side, I did a bit more playing around with the design of marshmallow-girl.
The not entirely coherent "narrative" (such as it is) around the outside sort of just happened. The arrow shows the first face to be drawn (and it went clockwise from there).
And lastly, a moment with The Freak in the Cape.
That is all.
